Wincest is not about brothers fucking. It’s about two people who cannot live without each other. Who were always meant to be and will always be everything to the other.
Sam and Dean are soul mates, and when everyone else in their life is gone, they will be alone with each other. Forever. They…
This thing is, and this is a really important point I think, wincest USED to mean brother fucking. The “cest” part refers to “incest”, which implies sex. Now, over the years (and I would say certainly since tumblr) the term seems to have evolved. It now seems to refer to the soul bonded, co-dependent, intense relationship that the actually brothers have on the show. It is extremely confusing for those of us who have been around since the beginning of the show/fandom to accept that “wincest” does not actually mean they are having sex. I think the reason for this is because there isn’t another terms that refers to the ACTUAL relationship on the show. Other than “brotherhood” - which just doesn’t seem to capture the intensity that fans who want to call it “wincest” (and not mean sex) does. Or, in fact, the intensity of the relationship we see on our screens.
So, I think there needs to be a certain amount of tolerance to those who have been in fandom long enough to only associate wincest with them having sex. The term “pre-wincest” exists as a way of describing the relationship before they actually have sex. So yeah, “wincest” will always mean a sexual relationship to me and probably fans who were around when it first emerged as a term for the Sam/Dean ship. I really wish there was another term that existed when an author (or artist) is actually referring to the relationship as we see it in the show. Personally, “co-dependent brotherhood” covers it for me. But clearly that’s not catchy enough.
I think it mostly becomes an issue when fans claim that “wincest” is canon. If they mean their “codependent, soul selling, die for each other brotherhood” then damn straight it’s canon. If they mean they are having sex, then nope, it’s not canon. So, I suppose if “wincest” no longer means the Sam/Dean ship (and sex), what’s the new ship name? Or can it still mean both - depending on the context?
I always thought Gencest was the term for fic about the brothers intense emotional bond but without the sex?
But Wincest will always mean a sexual relationship to me to. That’s why incest is in the title. If Wincest now means something else then I have been away from the fandom for too long :(
Of course, the other term for the brothers codependent, soul selling, die for each other brotherhood is well… canon.
